You Can Teach An Old Dog New Tricks
by Stanley Bronstein on July 1, 2009It’s never too late to learn how to do something new, IF you’re willing to let go of the old.
IT’S NEVER TOO LATE
I was reminded of that just today when I had a long time friend of more than 40 years who said he was considering going back to school so that he might be able to get a better job.
I was tickled pink when he said that. I immediately started trying to get him motivated and steering him in the right direction. I would love to see him better himself. I always wished he would have gone to college 30 years ago and now I’m glad to see he’s thinking about it.
BUT ISN’T IT TOO LATE
NO, ABSOLUTELY NOT. IT IS NEVER TOO LATE.
The bottom line is that he’s going to be alive for probably another 40 to 50 years (if not longer).
We live in a world that requires CONSTANT and NEVER ENDING improvement. We must always work toward bettering ourselves.
I FREQUENTLY HEAR THIS FROM OLDER PEOPLE
Older people frequently (but fortunately not always) tend to get “set in their ways” and they don’t want to go through the trouble of changing. A friend of mine ran into this at the hospital at which they work.
The hospital spent lots of money installing a brand new, totally computerized recordkeeping system that was designed to let the doctors enter their own data into the system and basically increase accuracy, reduce errors, save lives and reduce malpractice by their doctors.
Out of probably 25 or more doctors, ALL OF THEM (except 2) were complaining that they didn’t want to learn the system. My friend and one other, embraced the system immediately. Now my friend swears the new system is so much better and it has made it so much easier for them to do their job. BUT, the older doctors are still fighting and resisting. Some might even wind up retiring sooner because they don’t want to deal with the new system.
I think that’s a shame. We should NOT resist change, especially if it is change that will improve the situation. Here’s why:
CHANGE IS INEVITABLE
Change is going to happen no matter what we do. The world is constantly changing and it is doing so at a faster and faster pace.
I can promise you it’s not going to slow down.
But, I want to suggest to you that those who are willing to change; those who are willing to adapt; will grow the most over the coming years and decades.
GROWTH IS OPTIONAL
Change may be inevitable, but growth is optional. You are NOT required to grow, BUT if you want to success; if you want a better life; if you want to be a high achiever, then you need to be willing to do what it takes to grow.
At this point, I’m going to refer you to Laws of Positioning #104 – Position Yourself To Grow. You’ll find a lot of good information on the subject there.

Until next time, take care, my dear friends.Mr. Achievement
