Yet More Superior Thoughts

by Stanley Bronstein on October 10, 2008

TODAY, WE’RE GOING TO BE FOCUSING ON 5 SUPERIOR THOUGHTS.

Your job is to pick at least 1 of those 5 and do some heavy-duty thinking about it and to then share your thoughts with us as comments below.

1) That Which Does Not Kill You Makes You Stronger.

I first heard this line during the opening credits of one of the Conan the Barbarian movies.  Since then, I have become a little bit of a fan of Friedrich Nietzsche.  Some would say he was a little bit of a pessimist, but I try not to put labels on him.

Instead, I try to accept what I like about him and learn from it and then reject everything else.

In this thought, Nietzsche suggests that in order for us to grow strong, we must first be beaten down.

Just think of your normal exercise routine.  The way to make your muscles stronger is to first exercise them to the point of exhaustion (then let them rest and rebuild themselves to an even stronger level).

That’s what is going on here.  It is out of the adversities we face that we will find the means to grow stronger.  For example, my mother died when I was 8 years old.  That one single event changed my life forever.  While it hurt me at the time, I have no doubt that it made me a stronger individual as my life progressed because I had to deal with that adversity.

While I don’t like everything Nietzsche said, I agree with him 100% on this one.

2) Simple Pleasures Are The Hardest To Be Found.  They Can’t Be Measured Till They’re Not Around.

This line comes from the musician / singer / songwriter Debbie Gibson.

To me, this lyric suggests that we have to look for the simple things in life.  The simple pleasures; the things that often get taken for granted.

This could be the smile on your child’s face, the smell of your wife’s hair, the scent of the early morning rain as it comes off the desert floor.

It can be ANYTHING you like.

But, we all too often forget about them and ignore them.  That is the mistake that we make all too often.

Today’s economic crisis is an excellent example.  For years, we have taken the economic prosperity of the world for granted.  NOW, ALL OF A SUDDEN, POOF !!! – IT IS GONE.

Now we are all worried and struggling and trying to figure out what to do.

Our prosperity was a simple pleasure.  We took it for granted.  Now that it’s gone, we miss it sorely.

3) Find Your Style And Don’t Be Afraid To Follow It.

This is one of my favorite sayings of all time.  This relates to BEING YOURSELF; EMBRACING YOUR OWN IDEAS; and NOT BEING AFRAID OF STANDING UP FOR YOURSELF.

This idea is a hard one for many people to grasp.  While my parents were far from perfect when I was growing up, one thing they did teach me was to BELIEVE IN MYSELF.

That is an idea that I have embraced and is behind virtually everything I write about in my books and I teach to others.

BELIEVE IN YOURSELF.  BE YOURSELF.  FIND YOUR OWN STYLE.  EMBRACE IT. DON’T BE AFRAID TO FOLLOW IT.

4) Love Is Letting Go Of Fear.

Ah, fear.   Fear is the mind killer.  Fear is the little death that leads to brings total obliteration.

That little passage is just a part of the Litany Against Fear that comes from the book Dune, by Frank Herbert.

The bottom line is that fear can (and will) cripple us, IF WE LET IT.

Just think of today’s global economic climate.  EVERYONE IS AFRAID.  WE CANNOT BE AFRAID, BECAUSE IT WILL CRIPPLE US.  Instead we must face it; deal with it; and move on.

Now, apply these concepts of fear to love.  IF WE ARE AFRAID TO LOVE, WE WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO TRULY LOVE SOMEONE ELSE (or be loved by them).

It is only when we face this fear; deal with it; and ultimately let it go, that we can calm ourselves down and move forward.

This applies to love AND to so many other things in our lives.

5) Love When You Can, Cry When You Have To, Be Who You Must, That’s A Part Of The Plan.

This thought is about taking advantage of opportunity.

Do what you can, WHEN YOU CAN.  Appreciate it.  Embrace it.  THAT’S WHAT LIFE IS ABOUT.  THAT IS WHAT YOUR LIFE PLAN IS ABOUT.

Take advantage of the moment.  Appreciate the moment.  Now is the most precious time.  It will never come again.

This is a Zen Buddhist conceptWhen you can learn to appreciate the NOW, that is when you will truly be wise.
