Law #1 – Position Yourself to be Alive
Law #1
Position Yourself to be Alive
Am I lightheaded because I’m not dead or
because I’m still alive?
(Author Unknown)
Alive—full of energy and spirit; lively, having the quality of life; vivid; vibrant
Now that we have defined the word alive, I ask you a simple question. Are you alive?
Considering you are here, right now, reading this chapter, you are obviously “alive” in the technical sense of the word, but that’s not what I’m asking. I’m asking are you really alive.
Do you live each day with passion? Do you look forward to each and every day, or are you simply marking time as each day passes? In order to help you answer that question, please refer back to the definition of the word alive contained above.
Are you full or energy and spirit? Are you vivid and vibrant? That my friends, is what it is all about.
In order to be alive, we must be full of energy and spirit. By being full of energy and spirit, it puts us in a position to take advantage of the traits all highly successful people have in common.
By being full of energy and spirit, you are placing yourself in a position to have:
- VISION—you recognize details and opportunities others do not see
- ATTRACTION—you attract opportunities others do not attract
- READINESS—You are ready to act upon those opportunities better than others, and
- ACTION—You actually act upon those opportunities in a manner that others do not
That my friends, is what will make you successful.
If you are not full of energy and spirit; if you are not vivid and vibrant, then you will simply go through life as most people do. You will merely be existing.
Being alive can be a funny thing. We sometimes take it for granted, until our life is threatened. Then, all of a sudden, we realize that we love our life; that we love being alive and we want to keep going.
One of the most “alive” people I ever met was Peggy Chun, an artist from Honolulu, Hawaii. Peggy had amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, often referred to as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease. Peggy could not move any part of her body except for her eyes. Peggy lived at home on a ventilator. She had ALS for over 5 years and her condition had steadily worsened over that period. Most of us would probably think she lived a terrible existence and had little or no reason to go on living.
During her life, Peggy saw it differently. When I met with Peggy, she communicated to me, through her trained assistant tracking her eye movements (yes, that’s the only way she could communicate), how much she enjoyed her life. She looked forward to spending each and every day with her family. You see, despite the fact she was trapped inside a body that was steadily deteriorating, Peggy was more alive than most other people.
Those of us who are fortunate enough to still have the use of our bodies, as well as our minds, should appreciate that fact. We should learn to be alive. We should live each day, full of energy and spirit.
Peggy Chun passed away on November 19, 2008.
