Why More Communication CAN Lead To Resolving More Conflicts

by Stanley Bronstein on May 18, 2008

THIS POST TOPIC HAS BEEN SUGGESTED TO ME BY MY TWITTER FOLLOWERS, ALL OF HAVE ASKED ME TO EXPAND UPON CURRENT SOCIAL MEDIA TRENDS

===========================================================

The newest computer can merely compound, at speed, the oldest problem in the relations between human beings, and in the end the communicator will be confronted with the old problem, of what to say and how to say it. (Edward R. Murrow)

When Was This Quote Said?

I’m not sure of the exact date, but considering Edward R. Murrow has been dead for more than 40 years, it obviously wasn’t a recent quote.

Why Is The Date Of The Quote Relevant?

I believe the date of the quote is HIGHLY relevant, as it shows how the more things change, the more they stay the same. Murrow correctly predicted, over 40 years ago that even though computers were going to change the world, they were only going to speed things up. In fact, he even suggested that the increased speed would merely compound old problems, just a heck of a lot fast.

He correctly hit on the point I’ve been suggested in my last few posts: No matter how we use computers to communicate, things will only get better if we learn how to communicate and improve relations between people.

Some Definitions

Communication - The imparting or interchange of thoughts, opinions, or information by speech, writing, or signs. A document or message imparting news, views, information, etc.. Means of sending messages, orders, etc.

Compound - To increase or add to.

Communicator - One who communicates.

Confronted - To stand or come in front of; stand or meet facing. To be in one’s way.

Do I Agree With Murrow’s Quote?

Absolutely. When I set out to write this post, I knew what I wanted to say and I was searching for a quote that reflected my thoughts. I was tickled when I found his quote and I thought it summed it up perfectly.

My Theory

As I stated in yesterday’s post, my theory is that:

The easier it is for people to communicate; the more likely they are to communicate.

The more likely they are to communicate; the more likely they are to use that communication wisely.

The more wisely they use their communication opportunities, the more likely they are to resolve conflicts.

Plain and simple, I believe that the easier you make it for people to communicate, the more likely they are to resolve their conflicts.

Controlling Information Is The Key

Whoever controls the information can determine whether or not it is easy to communicate of hard.  They can determine whether or not people are allowed to wisely use whatever rights they have to communicate.  They can also ultimately determine whether or not conflicts are resolved.

This post is NOT intended to delve into politics or any other controversial topics.

Instead, it is to suggest that communication is the key !

Social Media And The Internet

Now that I have said that I believe communication is the key, you know why I like social media and the internet.  It facilitates communication.

What About The Accuracy Of The Information Being Communicated?

That is another topic for another day, but suffice it to say that not everything we read on the internet (or elsewhere for that matter) is accurate.  Much of it is, BUT, we must learn how to think for ourselves and learn how to process the information being communicated.

If you enjoyed this post, make sure you Stumble It!
Until next time, take care, my dear friends.
