The Battle Between Age And Youth

by Stanley Bronstein on March 1, 2010

Meditation for Monday – March 1, 2010

Age And Treachery Will Often Defeat Youth And Skill.

Age – The particular period of life at which a person becomes naturally or conventionally qualified or disqualified for anything.  Advanced years.

Treachery – Violation of faith; betrayal of trust.  Faithlessness.  Willful betrayal of confidence or trust.

Often – Many times.  Frequently.  In many cases.

Defeat – To overcome.  To frustrate.  To eliminate or deprive of something expected.

Youth – The time of being young.  Early life.  The appearance, freshness, vigor, spirit characteristic of one who is young.

Skill – The ability, coming from one’s knowledge, practice, aptitude, etc. to do something well.  Competent excellence in performance.  Expertness.

So What Is Being Suggested Here?

This quote suggests several things, but to me, the overall theme is that one acquires additional knowledge as they grow older.

Unfortunately, all too often, that additional acquired knowledge is the power of betrayal; the power of violating one’s trust.

A Real Life Example

I remember an incident that happened to me during my first job out of college.  I was 22 years old at the time.  One of my co-workers was in his early 60′s (we’ll call him Mr. X).

We had an upcoming project and I came up with a great idea as to how the work should be divided geographically between all the employees of the company.

Rather than take this idea directly to my boss, I happened to mention it to Mr. X.  To my surprise, about 15 minutes later, our boss comes through the office telling them of Mr. X’s wonderful idea and how we were going to act upon it immediately.

Imagine my surprise!

This was a perfect example of today’s meditation.

Mr. X thought nothing of going behind my back and “stealing” my idea, without giving me appropriate credit.  I would have never thought of doing such a thing.

So What Should I Do?

I’m not suggesting that all the young people around the world immediately adopt “treachery” and “betrayal” as their weapon of choice.

In fact I’m suggesting exactly the opposite.  Even though I’m now more than 50 years old, I value trust and loyalty more than ever.

What I am suggesting is that you should be on the “lookout” for the possibility of treachery and betrayal.  You should take appropriate action to prevent the possibility of this type of thing happening to you.

Instances From Your Life

Can you think of any similar incidents from your life?  If so, I’d love for you to share them below as comments.
