Thanks For The Life Lesson, But Goodbye . . .

What Is Time?
Time – A limited period or interval, as between two successive events. Duration regarded as belonging to the present life as distinct from the life to come or from eternity. A prescribed or allotted period.
Time is a funny thing. It can be both finite and infinite, depending on your perspective.
If you wish, check out the wikipedia article on time to get a little more info on the subject.
If Our Time Is Limited, How Should We Best Use It?
The answer is that we should use our time wisely.
Wise -Having the power of discerning and judging property as to what is true or right; possessing discernment, judgment or discretion.
As much as I hate to admit it I do NOT feel like I’ve been using my last few Sundays wisely.
I have spent at least half of my last 5 Sunday watching professional football.
Is professional football bad? NO, IN AND OF ITSELF, PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL IS NOT BAD.
BUT, here is what is bad. What is bad is that I am watching, in my opinion, professional players, ALL OF WHOM ARE GETTING PAID AT LEAST 10 TIMES WHAT I MAKE, IF NOT A HECK OF A LOT MORE, performing in a mediocre manner. In my opinion, at worst they don’t care and at best, they have no clue what they are doing.
So, why am I watching them? Because I am enamored with them. Like many males, I love my sports teams.
BUT, back to the question, is it a wise use of my time?
Yesterday, I watched my second straight showing of UTTER futility. My favorite American football team, the Houston Texans, FOR THE SECOND WEEK IN A ROW, dominated their opponent for 90% of the game. BUT, when it was all said and done, they had their heads handed to them and they looked like rank amateurs.
So, What’s My Point?
My point is NOT that they lost. My point is that the team is composed of a group of people who:
- Are ALL probably making at least 10 times as much money as I do (if not a heck of a lot more);
- All make their money, NO MATTER IF THEIR PERFORMANCE IS GOOD OR BAD (which is unlike me – if I mess up or don’t perform, I don’t get paid at all);
- All have little or no clue, in my opinion, about the real world. They are raised to believe the entire world revolves around them;
- None of these guys, in my opinion, care about me or my problems;
- Watching them is not going to pay my bills, get my work done, or make my life better in any way.
My point is this. I am done, I am cooked. I have at least 5 books I could have read yesterday and multiple other projects to do, ALL OF WHICH WOULD HELP ME BE BETTER PREPARED TO DEAL WITH THE ISSUES IN Y LIFE.
My point is that watching you is, in my opinion, a waste of my valuable time. There are at least 50 to 100 other things I could have done. You obviously don’t care about me (in my opinion), so why should I care about you?
Sayonara pro football. You have lost me, possibly forever . . .
I am alive, I am ambitious, I appreciate what I have (apparently, in my opinion, a lot more than these professional football players do) and NONE of it because of you. So long, have fun, I wish you well, but I have BIGGER things to concern myself with.

I gave up TV 25 years ago when I was on a temporary work assignment in California and lived in a rented apartment with rental furniture and no TV. What an eye-opener to see how much better my quality of life was with out it. So, it may not be just the football games! Now, if only I could give up the computer….

I don’t think I’ll ever TOTALLY give up TV, but I’ve definitely cut back on it immensely over the past several years.
Seems to me I’ve just decided to give it up a little bit more . . .

I have given up chunks of TV watching. I used to watch it all the time in the 80′s and 90′s but as the quality of comedies started to go down hill so did my TV watching. There are a handful of shows now that I will watch and one of them is on Thursday night and is in it’s final season as soon as it leaves the prime time line up Thursday will no longer be the greatest night on TV for me. I rarely turn on the TV when my son isn’t home as there really isn’t anything on that I want to watch. I do watch my soap ever so often just to catch up on things.
I don’t watch professional sports. I will watch college basketball though because I am an avid KU fan. I can watch one game in a fraction of the time a professional basketball game takes.

Joe:
Like you, I still watch some things (Star Trek for example).
Time to give up a few more things I watch.

There’s always opportunity cost. I believed Earl Nightingale said something like we cannot manage time but we can manage activities.

I believe we can manage time also, BUT like Nightingale said, primarily by deciding how we’re going to use it . . .
We have to use it wisely.
