Success Quote Of The Day – 03/26/2008
by Stanley Bronstein on March 26, 2008

Ability will never catch up with the demand for it.
–Malcolm S. Forbes
Ability – The power or capacity to do or act physically, mentally, legally, morally, etc.
Demand – The state of being wanted for purchase or use
Due to the current tough economic times the United States (and much of the rest of the world) are currently experiencing, many talented people are finding themselves in danger of already being out of work or possibly so in the near future. Additionally, many of today’s younger generations are finding it tougher to enter the work force.
This situation reminds me of what I was always taught in high school and college. I was taught that if you developed excellent skills (i.e. ability to do many varied things), you will always have a job (i.e. there will always be demand for your abilities). That’s one of the reasons I have always tried to learn as many different (and varied) skills as possible. There’s law, accounting, writing, speaking, computer programming, management, organizational skills, etc.
That’s what you have to do. You need to sit down and ask yourself some very penetrating questions:
- What skills do you currently have?
- What skills are currently in demand?
- Do the skills you currently have match up with those that are in demand?
- If your skills do not match up, what do you need to do to acquire the skills that are in demand?
The other piece of advice I was given was that no matter how good your current skill set is, you need to constantly work to improve it. So, you need to ask yourself another question:
- What are you willing to do to increase your skill set?
In my experience, that is a question so many people are unwilling or afraid to ask. What are you willing to do!
That question applies in all areas of our lives.
Since we’re on the subject of skills, I thought it would be appropriate to feature a video today from Carmen Canales, of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Carmen is the chief talent officer (think of it as human resources but oh so much more) for one of the largest law firms in the state of North Carolina. Carmen is an expert at giving advice on the enhancement of one’s career. With that in mind, you should watch the video below where she talks about that subject.
Carmen Canales is one of the persons who will be featured in my upcoming book:
50 Stories Of Powerful People
Who Positioned Themselves To The Top
