Stanley Bronstein – The CPA

by Stanley Bronstein on February 5, 2008

People often ask me why I decided to become a CPA.

The best answer I can give is that I have ALWAYS wanted to be a CPA. From a very young age, I used to help my father with his bookkeeping. I used to look forward to income tax time when he would let me help him “pull his records together”. One of my greatest thrills was around the age of 15 when my father realized that I knew how to pull his records together at least as well as he did, so he started letting me do it by myself. Like any good supervisor, he would periodically check what I was doing and make sure everything was being done properly, but he mostly let me do it by myself.

Upon graduating from high school, there was:

  • never any doubt I would be going to college;
  • never any doubt as to which college I would be attending (Univ of Texas at Austin); and
  • never any doubt I would be an accounting major.

So, in the fall of 1977, I packed up my car and drove from Galveston to Austin and embarked upon my college career. After 4 “fun-filled” years of hard work, I graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Accounting.

I didn’t take the traditional route of most accountants, in that my first job was NOT for an accounting firm. However, after 5 years, I had accumulated the necessary experience and had passed the CPA exam, so in March 1986, I became a CPA! That was a great day in my life and I still remember it very well.

Since that time, I have continued to maintain a CPA practice for more than 20 years, but over time, more and more of my work has shifted to the practice of law and to my professional speaking career. More on that later.
