RIP – Charlie “Tremendous” Jones

by Stanley Bronstein on October 17, 2008

The Passing Of A Legend

At 4:00 PM on Thursday, October 16, 2008, Charlie “Tremendous” Jones of Mechanicsburg, PA passed away after a lengthy illness at the age of 81.

My heart and thoughts go out to Charlie’s family during this obviously difficult time.

Who Was Charlie Tremendous?

Charlie was an incredible humanitarian and world reknowned public speaker. You can find more information by going to his website: TremendousJones.com

I Was Fortunate To Have Met Him

I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to meet and interview Charlie a little less than one year ago, while he was still in good enough health to share his thoughts and ideas.

I thought so highly of him, that Mr. Tremendous is one of the 50 individuals showcased in my recently released book, Achievement IQ Moments – 50 Stories About Extraordinary People

Rather than say any more about the man, I’m simply going to post several short video clips from that video interview below.

Videos

Charlie “Tremendous” Jones talks about letting your “gift” find you. He talks about having purpose in your life.

Charlie “Tremendous” Jones talks about how he came to be known as Mr. “Tremendous”.

In this video, Charlie “Tremendous” Jones talks about how he doesn’t work 18 hours per day, he “worships” 18 hours a day, which makes it a lot easier and a lot more enjoyable.

In this video, Charlie “Tremendous” Jones talks about how he can predict where you will be and what you will have accomplished 5 years from now

Charlie “Tremendous” Jones talks about how he believes nobody is entitled to a “free” lunch. We all have to earn what we get in this life.

Charlie “Tremendous” Jones talks about how he acquired his love of books and how he tries to instill a love of reading in others.

Charlie “Tremendous” Jones talks about letting your mind control your body.

Hi Stanley,

Charlie Tremendous Jones is why I am a hugger today.

I don’t shake hands, it’s too stiff, to safe, I hug.

Charlie hugged me when I needed one most.

And it changed my entire life.

His story is one of my favorites in your book mate.

Thank you,

Hugging was Charlie’s trademark . . . One of the only guys I’ve ever met who could pull that off no matter who he was speaking with …

I wonder if he ever hugged the Queen of England ???

I was fortunate to have read about him in your book my favorite part is where he says”If your not thankful for what you have, what makes you think you will be thankful if you have any more.”

I also am a big proponent of the philosophy that he has in regards to reading and how what you read and who you read affects how and who you will become. Thank you for sharing this insightful man with the world Stanley.

Stanley,
Great video clips of Charlie “Tremendous” Jones. I never had the pleasure of seeing him in person, but I have listened to several tapes and seeing your videos brought me a lot of pleasure. He will certainly be missed not only among the speakers’ world, but by business and professional people all over the world.

Thank you for sharing the stories he told you.

Thank you for your wonderful tribute and words. I’m the youngest of Charlie’s six children, and there is a great celebration in Heaven. It is comforting to see and read all the wonderful comments as a testimony to his life.

Jamie:

You are VERY welcome. I also believe in celebrating down here on Earth. Your Dad has gone to a better place and is sharing his love and kindness there. That is something definitely worth celebrating.

Take care.

Hello Jamie,

I had the pleasure and the privilege of enjoying half a day with your Dad prior to one of his speaking engagements back in the early 90′s. It is a time that I will NEVER forget. Especially those hugs. He lifted me clear off the floor and I am not a small bloke. Charlie remains my all time favourite speaker but more than that I have never met a more genuine and caring person in all of my business dealings. Your Dad has left a legacy behind with so much humour and so much grace that is now a part of so many people. He insisted on those around him being applauded rather than accepting the applause for himself. By the way, he tells a story of having his son write a review on each book he read and of almost coming to tears when reading the letters home from college at being so proud of how this young man had grown. That particular story may or may not have been about you but the pride on his face showed how much love he held for all of his kids. I am proud to have met your Dad. He is one of the few truly TREMENDOUS people that I have known. Thanks for allowing us to have a little of him for ourselves. Rick H, Melbourne, Australia.

P.S. I now use a lot of what I am learning from your Dad in raising my own children and they make me proud every day. Thanks Charlie, you are Tremendous.

Stanley,

Thanks so much for these videos. You really captured the esence of Charlie. I’ve known him for more than 30 years and he had a greater impact on my life than anyone. I’ve been to at least two dozen of his programs over the years and always came away uplifted and inspired. We did two books together, the newest of which tells how he motivated Jere to become a reader. I’ve been blessed to stay at his home on several occasions (as he has in mine) and he’s always been a delight and a joy to be with.

I still listen regularly to his tapes. Even though I’ve heard his stories many times, I still laugh as though I’d never heard them before. And whenever I’ve gotten one of his bone-crushing hugs, I could never be sure what message he’d whisper in my ear. It was either “I love you,” or “Quit struggling; I don’t like this any more than you do.”

Charlie was the most humble man I ever knew and his love for the Lord was a wonderful example to me. I loved him deeply and will miss him Tremendously!

Bob

Charlie was special to us all. As I’ve said before, I’ve probably never met a more interesting man in my almost 50 years.

First heard of “Mr Tremendous” through one of Jerry Clark’s “Standing on the Shoulder of Giants” CD series. What a fitting tribute back then … I learned so much from that recording, especially the power of meeting people and reading = growth. I have shared it with my son and others I care about. I found out about his passing on Wed (Nov 5th) while listening to a playback of a Les Brown 20 Oct 08 conference. I was devastated about the news and even today … I am still grieving — not because of his death, but because of all of the others who will miss hearing his voice and gaining insights as all of us have. Please get the word out about this GIANT … Thanks. Continued favor to his family.

I just finished a One Minute book, that mentioned Charlie Tremendous Jones, I didn’t know
he passed away when I started looking him up this evening. What a great speaker he was.
I did meet him once decades ago, This is what I remember and thank him for. He told me and a large sales crowd to Come to Jesus Christ, Ask Jesus to be your personal Lord and Savior.
I did.

God Bless, Life well done, he made people smile, he was a great mentor, a great vision for life’s journey.

He wrote a bible verse in a book I purchased from him, if you crossed his path, you remember him.

Tremendous Joy.
John

I met Charlie at Sydney International Airport, where he snuck up on me and my mate and gave us one of those big hugs, we then drove him to a convention in newcastle, on the way,he suprised us by buying us lunch at Macdonalds, he pulled out the biggest bunch of australian two dollar notes we had ever seen. we just laughed so much. at the time they had just been removed from circulation, and we were going to a two dollar coin. in our time with him were blessed with the things he shared with us. I had a tape of charlie that had produced where he spoke about balance in life and the need to love deeply, I am who I am today because he taught me how to be a man, a father, a friend and a lover. i would not have travelled this far if it was not for his words. the difference from where you are today and five years from now will be the books you read and the people you meet. I owe my life to a man that has had more impact through my life when things were at there worst, charlies words helped me through.
to a man who loved God and Christ so deeply, I say thank you for the way in which you showed us all how to be real laugher. May you keep God in stitches

love and respect
Andrew Hynes
