Preventing Problems

by Stanley Bronstein on December 22, 2009

Meditation for Tuesday Morning – December 22, 2009

An Ounce Of Prevention Is Worth A Pound Of Cure.

SOME DEFINITIONS FIRST

Dictionary.com defines prevention as:

  • The act of  keeping from occurring; averting
  • The act of hindering or stopping from doing something

Dictionary.com defines cure as:

  • a means of correcting or relieving anything that is troublesome or detrimental
  • a means of healing or restoring to health; remedy

BEFORE vs. AFTER

Preventing is the act of taking care of a problem BEFORE it happens.

Curing is the act of dealing with a problem AFTER it happens.

A FEW REALIZATIONS

1) If you prevent a problem, that problem will NEVER come into existence, thus you will never have to cure it.

2) If you do NOT prevent a problem, then two things can happen.

  • Either it never comes to pass, in which case it won’t need to be cured, or
  • It will come to pass and then you will have to either cure it or live with the problem.

3) If the problem does indeed come to pass it will probably require more energy to cure it than it might have taken to have prevented in the first place.

4) Some problems may not be preventable.

WE’RE GOING TO EXPAND UPON THIS IDEA IN FUTURE MEDITATIONS

While we will explore this in greater detail in future meditations, I think we should keep it simple in the beginning.

I want you to think of 5 problems you could have possibly prevented in the past that you did NOT prevent from taking place.

Then, ask yourself, would it have been easier to have gone through the effort to have prevented that problem than it ultimately was for you to either deal with the problem (cure it) or to live with the problem?
