Persons vs. Things

Meditation for Thursday – March 4, 2010
Persons Are Not Things
And Therefore Not To Be Used As Things.
Person – A human being, as distinguished from an animal or a thing. A self-conscious or rational being.
Not - In no way; to no degree. Used to express negation, denial, refusal or prohibition.
Thing – A material object without life or consciousness; an inanimate object.
Therefore – In consequence of; as a result.
Used – To employ for some purpose; to avail oneself of; apply to one’s own purposes.
So What Is Being Suggested Here?
There is a difference between people and things.
The difference between the two is consciousness. People have consciousness. Things do not.
Take It A Step Further
While I realize some might disagree, I think we should focus on consciousness.
If we make that the keystone of our discussion, then today’s meditation would also apply to animals. They too have consciousness. It may not be on the same level as a human being, but it is still consciousness.
How Are We Supposed To Treat Conscious Beings?
We are supposed to treat conscious beings with love and respect.
People are NOT to be used or applied for our own purposes.
Love – A feeling of warm personal attachment or deep affection.
Respect – Esteem for or a sense of the worth or excellence of a person, a personal quality or ability, or something considered as a manifestation of a personal quality or ability.
How Are We Supposed To Treat Things?
Things are to be used.
Things are to be employed for some purpose. Things are to be applied to our own purposes.
Things are NOT to be loved and respected.
A Statement About Today’s Society
In my opinion, we live in a society that, all too often, uses people and loves and respects things.
We step all over people to get the things we want.
When we get the things we want, we spend all of our times loving and respecting those things.
In short, we have it backwards . . .
