Patience Can Be An Active Process

by Stanley Bronstein on August 13, 2009

Patience is waiting. Not passively waiting. That is laziness. But to keep going when the going is hard and slow – that is patience. (Author Unknown)

Three Main Definitions Of Patience

1) Quiet, steady perseverance; even-tempered care; diligence.

2) An ability or willingness to suppress restlessness or annoyance when confronted with delay; and

3) The quality of being patient, as the bearing of provocation, annoyance, misfortune, or pain, without complaint, loss of temper, irritation, or the like.

Passiveness And The Laws Of Positioning

Not a single one of the 3 above definitions says that you must be passive.  Passiveness is a generally thought of as a state of NOT reacting.

Passively waiting is NOT something I like to do.  As you know from my writings on the Laws of Positioning, I believe that one must “position” themselves to be ready to act when opportunities come there way.

Consequently, I do believe in sitting around and doing nothing.  Instead I believe that if you know you are going to have to be patient; if you know you are going to have to wait, YOU SHOULD BE DOING SOMETHING PRODUCTIVE WHILE YOU ARE WAITING.

An Example

Many of my clients have been telling me that their business is down.  They are telling me they are not as busy as they would like to be while they are waiting for the economy to hopefully get better.

I’ve been telling all of my clients that they need to find a productive activity to keep them busy while they are waiting for things to improve.  That way, they are positioning themselves to be ready once the opportunity comes their way.

For example, I have taken it upon myself to exercise for 3 to 4 hours each day.  Because of the nature of my business, I am able to take my cell phone with me for long walks.  I still can get work done with my Blackberry, PLUS I listen to audiobooks that are designed to increase my knowledge on a variety of subjects.

In other words, I am positioning myself while I am waiting.  I am being active while I am waiting, NOT passive.
