Licking Our Wounds

by Stanley Bronstein on March 22, 2010

Meditation for Monday – March 22, 2010

It Is Impossible To Be A Participant In The March Of Time
And Not Get A Few Blisters

Impossible- Not possible; unable to be, exist or happen.  Unable to be done, performed or effected.  Incapable of being true.

Participant- One who takes part in something.

March – Advance; progress; forward movement.

Time – A period or interval.  A period in the history of the world.

Get- To receive or come to have possession of.

Few – Not many, but more than one.  A small number or amount.

Blisters – A swelling of the skin, as from a burn or other injury.

So What Is Being Suggested Here?

Quite simply, today’s meditation suggests that if you are going to be alive (i.e., if you are going to participate in the world), stuff WILL happen.

It’s inevitable.

I was reminded of that this week, not once, but twice during my daily walks.

Those who are regular readers of this blog probably know that I make it a daily habit to walk 3 to 4 hours daily.

Most of the time, these walks are uneventful, but not this week.

It started a couple of days ago when I was “attacked” by a cactus that took a liking to my left leg.  About 20 semi-painful minutes later, the offending cactus was removed.   The after effects are mostly gone, but I can still feel it in a couple of spots where I was stuck.

Then today, for the first time since I started walking over a year ago, I fell.  Face forward, right into a pile of dirt and rocks.

Fortunately, I was wearing a long-sleeve shirt that was covering my palms, so they didn’t get cut up when I used my hands to catch myself.  My left wrist is a little sore, but all in all everything seems to be pretty much okay.

So, What’s The Point?

The point is that stuff is going to happen.  The very act of going out into the world and walking on a daily basis increases the likelihood that something can and will happen.

It’s inevitable.

But, despite that fact, that should not be a valid reason to not go walking every day.  Walking every day has done so many positive things for me that it’s well worth the risks of things such as falling and being attacked by a cactus.

Being alive (i.e. participating) requires that we take risks.  So, go out, and don’t be afraid to participate.  Be alive.
