Position Yourself To Be Persuasive

The passions are the only advocates which always persuade. They are a natural art, the rules of which are infallible; and the simplest man with passion will be more persuasive than the most eloquent without. (François de la Rochefoucauld)

Some Definitions

Passion(s) – Boundless enthusiasm. Any powerful or compelling emotion or feeling, as love or hate. A strong or extravagant fondness, enthusiasm, or desire for anything. See Law #69 – Position Yourself To Be Passionate.

Only – Without others or anything further; alone; solely; exclusively.

Advocate(s) – To speak or write in favor of; support or urge by argument; recommend publicly. A person who speaks or writes in support or defense of a person, cause. A person who pleads for or in behalf of another.

Always – Every time; on every occasion; without exception. All the time; continuously; uninterruptedly.

Persuade – To induce to believe by appealing to reason or understanding; convince. To prevail on (a person) to do something, as by advising or urging. Urge, influence, move, entice, impel.

Natural – Arising easily or spontaneously. Existing in or formed by nature. Having a real or physical existence, as opposed to one that is spiritual, intellectual, fictitious, etc..

Art – Illustrative or decorative material. The quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance.

Rule(s) – A principle or regulation governing conduct, action, procedure, arrangement, etc.. The customary or normal circumstance, occurrence, manner, practice, quality, etc..

Infallible – Unfailing in effectiveness or operation; certain. Absolutely trustworthy or sure.

Simplest – Easiest to understand, deal with, use. The least complicated. The most common or ordinary.

Man – A human being; person. The human individual as representing the species, without reference to sex.

More -In greater quantity, amount, measure, degree, or number. Something of greater importance.

Most – In the greatest quantity, amount, measure, degree, or number. Greatest, as in size or extent.

Eloquent – Having or exercising the power of fluent, forceful, and appropriate speech. Characterized by forceful and appropriate expression.

Without – With the absence, omission, or avoidance of; not with; with no or none of; lacking. Free from; excluding. Not accompanied by.

Rhetoric -The art of making persuasive speeches; oratory.  The undue use of exaggeration or display; bombast.

What Does This Quote Suggest?

The quote suggests that passion is the only thing we can do to ALWAYS persuade.  If we constantly have passion in what we do, then we will be successful in persuading.

Why is that?  It’s because passions are natural.  If you act from your passions, you will always be natural.  You will never be fake.

No matter how much of a fast talker someone is; no matter how great of a speaker they are; a simple man with passion will be able to do a better job of persuading than a dispassionate person.

As I said before, it’s because the passionate person will be natural.  People will perceive that passion and they will want to jump on your bandwagon.

Being Natural Is The Key

Natural is real.  Natural is powerful.  Natural arises easily and spontaneously.

Natural actions reflect the power and passion of the individual.

Unnatural actions do not.  Actions that are forced simply will not get it as done as easy, spontaneous ones.

As Friedrich von Schiller said:

Power is the most persuasive rhetoric.

Rhetoric can be good and rhetoric can be bad. Taken too far, rhetoric can be full of undue exaggeration and fakeness.

On the other hand, POWERFUL words; words that are backed by your natural abilities and passions, is the most effective rhetoric.  People will listen to it and it will persuade them.

Your Actions Will Persuade More Than Your Words

People watch what you do constantly.  You need to make sure that your actions are consistent with your words.  If they are; if they are natural; you will be more successful in persuading people than you ever dreamed possible.

Hi Stanley,
Passion is a powerful emotion and has carried me over many an obstacle. I also think enthusiasm, which could be part of your passion, is also important. I give a keynote called How to Succeed When You Don’t Feel Successful. It offers stories of my journey through the ups and downs of entrepreneurship and the ten lessons I’ve learned about fulfilling your dreams. One of my lessons is this: Enthusiasm Expands Experience. I’ve learned that passion for a project can increase your confidence and competence while your learning.
If you got that gut wrenching desire, go after your goal.
