What Is Excellence?

Quite simply, it is honing yourself, refining yourself, all to the point where you are able to surpass others in some respect or area.

It doesn’t mean you have to surpass everyone in everything.  That would be a pretty difficult task.

Instead, I believe it means that we need to find our niche, to find our area, in which we have the ability to be excellent; the ability to surpass others with respect to that area.

That is what high achievers (AIQers) do, almost instinctively.  They find their niche and then they become an expert in that area.

The Two Meanings Of Today

If you go to the definition above for the word “today”, you will note it has two meanings.

The first is for the present day.  The one we are living and experiencing right at this moment.

The other says the present time or the present age.  To me an age is a much longer period of time.  It can span months, years, decades, even centuries.

So, which one applies here?

Both apply here. Not only is the present day a fine time to be excellent, BUt the present age in which we live in is a fine time to do something excellent too.

In other words, we must focus on both the short-term (the present day) and the long-term (the present age), if we want to position ourselves for success.

A Funny Story

I first heard the above quote in one of my college accounting classes.  The teacher would begin EVERY class by reciting that quote.  It used to drive me nuts.  At the time, I thought he was weird.

The funny thing is that now, nearly 30 years later, I think he was a genius.  If I knew where he was, I would love to shake his hand today and thank him for the wisdom he imparted.

So, what does this mean?  It means that we should keep an open mind as we meet others, because there just might be some wisdom in their words.  Would it be nice if we were actually listening as they imparted that wisdom?

So, How Does One Become Excellent?

  1. Figure out where your passion lies.  What do you like to do?  What are you good at?
  2. Once you’ve figured that out, practice in that area PASSIONATELY, and slowly get better and better in that area.  Don’t be afraid to fail, as failure is a necessary ingredient of success.

A Little Bit Of Closing Encouragement

Today is another fine day in which to excel.

Do something excellently today !!!
