Law #105 – Position Yourself To Be Respected
Your Reputation Inevitably Precedes You. If It Inspires Respect, Your Work Is Done For You Before You Arrive On The Scene. (Author Unknown)
Some Definitions
Reputation – The estimation in which a person or thing is held, especially by the community or the public generally.
Precede – To go before, as in place, order, rank, importance, or time. To go or come before.
Inspire – To influence or impel. To prompt or instigate by influence.
Respect – Esteem for or a sense of the worth or excellence of a person, a personal quality or ability, or something considered as a manifestation of a personal quality or ability.
What Is The Quote Suggesting
To me, this quote suggests that if you want to be respected, you have to perform actions worthy of respect.
In other words, you have to build a positive reputation in order to get respect.
How Do You Build A Positive Reputation?
One builds a positive reputation by repeatedly acting and behaving positively.
Ideally, one’s reputation is not based upon any one thing at any one given moment.
Instead, it is based upon a series of acts they have performed over time. It is based upon having demonstrated a proven history of doing the right thing; each and every time; over time.
That’s A Major Problem These Days
In my opinion, our society is all too often based upon instant gratification.
In other words, you have 30 seconds to impress me otherwise I’m going to move on to something else.
This is a mistake.
Our world is full of 30 second wonders. Just watch the national and world news on TV on any given night.
Those are not the people who impress me. Those are no the people I respect.
I respect the people who just sit back and each and every day continue, over and over and over, to do the right thing.
