Law #103 – Position Yourself To Fulfill Your Potential

You Will Never Come Across A Greater Adversary Than Your Own Potential. (Star Trek:  Next Generation – Episode Titled “Evolution”)

Some Definitions

Potential – Possible, as opposed to actual.  Capable of being or becoming.  A latent excellence or ability that may or may not be developed.

Greater – Being more unusual or considerable in degree, power, intensity, etc.

Adversary – Opponent.  A person, group, or force that opposes or attacks.  A contestant.

What Is The Quote Suggesting

To me, this quote suggests the importance of fulfilling one’s own potential.

No matter what battles you face in life, your biggest battle is going to be the one you face against yourself as you attempt to fulfill your own potential.

Why Is That?

Many reasons.

1) No one knows you better than you know yourself.  Consequently, you are more equipped to oppose yourself than anyone else or anything else out there.

2) When you battle yourself, everything comes into play.  There are no barriers as to what is fair and unfair.  There are no restrictions.  Combat gets down to its lowest level.

3) Potential is a moving target. The more you achieve; the more you potentially can achieve.  In other words, your potential is always a moving target.  You may accomplish one goal, but then you have to keep moving toward the next one.

4) Living up to your potential takes guts.   I’ve heard it said that an “entrepreneur is someone who dares to live up to their potential.”  The key word is “daring”.

5)  We don’t always see our own potential.  It’s sad, but true.  I see many people who could accomplish so much more, if they simply believed in their ability to do so.

6)  People often underestimate their capacity to change.  This is similar to #5 above.  The first step to changing is believing that we are capable of change.

7)  People often focus on their limitations instead of their potential.   Alan Loy McGinnis once said: Focus on your potential instead of your limitations. The truth is that we are going to become what we think about the most.  If we think we are limited; we will be limited.  If we think we have potential; we will have potential.

What’s The Best Way To Position Ourselves To Fulfill Our Own Potential?

Believing in yourself; your abilities; your talents; and your ideas.

If you believe in yourself, you have virtually unlimited power.

What’s The Best Gift You Can Give To Your Children (And Others)?

Teach them to believe in themselves; their abilities; their talents; their ideas.

Teach them that virtually anything is possible.
