Escaping From Situations

by Stanley Bronstein on December 15, 2009

Meditation for Tuesday Morning – December 15, 2009

There Is No Situation That You Cannot Escape From.

What Do I Mean By Escape?

Dictionary.com defines escape as:

  • to slip away from or elude
  • to succeed in avoiding

Avoidance Appears To Be The Key

To me, the key point here appears to be avoiding the situation.  Avoidance is quite different from defeating something.

Something can be avoided, yet still exist.  Once it is defeated, it is gone forever.

For example:  I might face a situation where a department store wants to raise their price on an item I wish to purchase.

I can “escape” from that situation by simply choosing to not buy the item, or by choosing to not buy it from them.   have “escaped”, but the situation still exists.  It no longer affects me directly, because I have chosen to walk away from it.

Alternatively, I could go to the store and through quite a bit of hard work, convince them to sell it to me at the lower price.  That would be “defeating” the store’s intent to charge the higher price.  In that case, I didn’t avoid the situation, I simply faced it head-on and defeated it.

So Which Is Better – Avoiding The Situation Or Defeating It?

I’m not sure.  I suspect that it all depends on the situation.  Sometimes it might be better to avoid the situation (especially if we have alternatives).  Other times, it might be better to face the situation head-on and work to overcome it (especially if no other alternative exists).

The Other Key Point In This Meditation

The other key point in this meditation is coming to the realization that no matter whether we choose to avoid a situation, or face it head-on, IT CAN BE OVERCOME.

There is hope.  No matter the situation, there is always hope.

What do you think?

I thought about this topic during a 3 hour walk this morning. Here are some of my thoughts:

SITUATIONS I AVOIDED IN 2009

1) Remained positive, despite having had plenty of opportunity to have turned negative
2) Held on to my dreams and belief that I will fulfill those dreams

SITUATIONS DEFEATED IN 2009

1) Overeating
2) Lack of exercise
3) Motivation – Have been able to keep myself motivated

SITUATIONS I WILL AVOID IN 2010

1) Negative opinions of others

SITUATIONS I WILL DEFEAT IN 2010

1) Talking when I should be listening (I will become a better listener)
