Encourage Dreaming

by Stanley Bronstein on March 2, 2010

Meditation for Tuesday – March 2, 2010

It Is Out Of Dreams That Reality Is Made.
Encourage Dreaming.

Out Of – Used to indicate the source.  Used to indicate the origin.

Dreams – An aspiration; goal; aim.  A vision.

Reality – Something that exists independently of ideas concerning it.  Something that constitutes an actual thing, as distinguished from something that is merely apparent.

Love – Affectionate concern for the well-being of others.

Encourage – To promote, advance, or foster.  To stimulate by assistance or approval.  To inspire with courage, spirit or confidence.

Dreaming – The act of setting aspirations, goals; aims; visions.

So What Is Being Suggested Here?

This quote suggests two major points:

1)  Dreaming (i.e. setting goals, visions, aspirations) is such a good thing it should be promoted.

2) Dreaming is such a powerful thing and such a good thing that it would be a crime if it were not encouraged, or even worse, if it were discouraged.

Let’s Focus On The Second Point

All too often, those around us (usually unintentionally) do things to discourage us.

I know in my own life I often have people around me seek to discourage me from “dreaming big”; from attempting to set big goals.  They do this under the belief that they are protecting us from disappoint.

That may be true, but personally I don’t think they’re doing us any favors.  Yes, not dreaming big will reduce the possibility of being disappointed, but it will also reduce the possibility of anything big happening in our lives.

For this reason, I believe we should encourage ourselves to dream and we should encourage others around us to dream.

This applies even more to those of us who serve as role models, such as parents.  One of the greatest things a parent can do for their child is to encourage them to dream BIG.  One of the worst things a parent can do for their child is to discourage them from dreaming.  It may reduce disappoints in the short-term, but it will affect them negatively for the rest of their lives.
