Downtime - WHY It’s So Important

by Stanley Bronstein on October 4, 2008

What Is Downtime?

My definition of “down time” is that time when we totally relax; the time when we let everything go and forget about ANY and ALL of our responsiblities to anyone else (our families, friends, our employees, the rest of the world, whatever).

Wikipedia refers to “downtime” as an outage; in other words a period of time when a system is unavailable or offline.  Wikipedia says this usually results in the system being unable to function.

While Wikipedia is referring to computer systems, I’m referring to something EQUALLY, IF NOT MORE important.  HUMAN systems.

Why Do We Need Downtime?

Quite simply, if we don’t have “downtime” every so often, we will collapse.  Our “human” systems will fail.

Humans require rest.  Humans require time to regroup.  Humans require time to “get it all together.”

AND, do you know what the best proof that’s out there that indicates humans require downtime?

The best proof out there is that COMPUTER SYSTEMS, as perfect and as indestructible as they are REQUIRE DOWNTIME.

Think about it.  If computers require downtime, then why can’t humans require it also?

I’m In A Period Of Downtime Right Now

Right now, as we speak, I’m sitting at home relaxing.  I have PURPOSELY let the world around me STOP for the day (maybe even tomorrow too - but I do plan on watching some football).

I’m doing this so I can relax.  So I can stop worrying about everything that is going on around me.  So I can have a day to my self.  TODAY, I”M GOING TO HAVE FUN AND BE JOYFUL !!!

WE ALL NEED TO DO THAT FROM TIME TO TIME.

Downtime is the time where our unconscious and subconscious minds have a chance to tell the conscious mind what to do when the latter is awake.

Vivienne:

I agree with you completely. Downtime also is when our bodies have a chance to rest and rebuild.
