Breaking The Rules

by Stanley Bronstein on July 31, 2009

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about “innovation” over the past few days.

It has occurred to me that some of the most successful people are those who are willing to think outside the box. They are willing to “break” the rules a little bit.

But what do I mean by “breaking” the rules? I don’t mean going totally off the deep end.  I don’t mean doing things that are unethical.   Instead, I mean that we should not be afraid to try things, just because the conventional wisdom tells us we won’t be successful.

By way of an example, Albert Einstein “broke” the rules when he first came up with his Special Theory of Relativity. All the great physicists of his time were “stuck”, because they all believed that time was fixed and could never be changed. That was the “rule”. Einstein, decided to throw out that rule and once he was willing to believe that time was NOT a fixed constant, that he started to come up with his groundbreaking theories.

I believe these same type of principals apply in our lives. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had an idea and immediately the naysayers began to tell me how bad it was. Fortunately, I was willing to stick to my guns and see the idea through to the end. The results were miraculous.

I believe you should be willing to do the same thing.
