Being Yourself
by Stanley Bronstein on December 20, 2009Meditation for Sunday Morning – December 20, 2009
Be Yourself. Everyone Else Is Already Taken.
THIS MEDITATION IS ALL ABOUT BEING UNIQUE
Dictionary.com defines unique as:
- having no like or equal; unparalleled; incomparable
- existing as the only one or as the sole example; single; solitary in type or characteristics
REMEMBER – YOU ARE UNIQUE
Remember. No matter how you feel about yourself, there is no one else just like you.
This is something we should embrace.
Instead, all too many people try to be like others around them. They look up to others and they try to “fit in.”
While there is nothing wrong with “fitting in”, the world would be awfully boring if everyone was just like everybody else.
EMBRACING YOUR UNIQUENESS
We will only be able to grow; to maximize our potential when we decide to embrace our uniqueness.
I remember realizing, many years ago, that I am different from everyone else around me.
Many people would find that thought scary. Instead, I’ve chosen to be glad that I’m not like everybody else.
I think that makes me much stronger, because I’m not allowing my fear of being unique to hold me back.
MY MOTTO
I believe the reason most people want to “fit in” is that they’re afraid of being perceived as not being normal.
I believe there is an all-important difference between being normal and functioning within the bounds of normality.
In other words, I believe the following about myself:
I am not normal, BUT I function within the bounds of normality.
For example, I’m not just like everyone else, BUT:
- I pay my bills;
- I work hard to stay out of trouble;
- I go to work each day;
- I get my job done;
- I follow the rules, etc.
In other words, I function as a contributing member of society, BUT I do it in my own way. That’s where my uniqueness comes in.
As you meditate on this subject, I want you to think about how you’re unique and how you can embrace your uniqueness.

The main thought that has, for me, come out of today’s meditation is that I’m NOT afraid to be myself.
As long as my goals are “just” I can’t be afraid to speak out and to act.
Fear holds us back. One of those fears is a fear of being different. I choose to not be afraid to be different. In fact, we should embrace our differences.
After all, if we were all the same, how interesting would that be?
