A Sense Of Humor

by Stanley Bronstein on May 6, 2008

A sense of humor is a sense of proportion. (Kahlil Gibran)

Sense – Any of the faculties, as sight, hearing, smell, taste, or touch, by which humans and animals perceive stimuli originating from outside or inside the body. A feeling or perception produced through the organs of touch, taste, etc., or resulting from a particular condition of some part of the body. A more or less vague perception or impression.

Humor – The faculty of perceiving what is amusing or comical. The faculty of expressing the amusing or comical. An instance of being or attempting to be comical or amusing.

Proportion – Comparative relation between things or magnitudes as to size, quantity, number, etc.; ratio. Proper relation between things or parts. A portion or part in its relation to the whole.

Sanity – Soundness of mind. Soundness of judgment.

What Was Gibran Suggesting?

I believe Gibran was suggesting that if we acquire the ability to see the amusing / funny things in life, it allows us to perceive everything in its proper proportion. In other words, if we can develop a sense of humor, it will keep us from taking life too seriously. After all, if we take life too seriously, we are going to lose out on many of the finer aspects of life.

Humor Keeps Us Sane

If we can learn to laugh, we can learn to overcome almost anything. Will Rogers said: We are all here for a spell; get all the good laughs you can. Why is laughter so important? I believe it’s because laughter keeps us sane. If we are unable to laugh, we are unable to experience joy. If we are unable to experience joy, we will take everything too seriously. If we take everything too seriously, then there will be little or no fun in our lives. If there is little or no fun in our lives, then we will go nuts. It’s just that simple.

Humor Makes Our Lives Better

A little laughter everyday makes our lives better. in my office, we make it a habit to laugh daily, as many times as we can. Why? Because it makes our lives better. It takes the edge off things. Laughter helps us to relax and allow things to happen naturally. When we laugh, things are more spontaneous. When things are more spontaneous, things just happen and those things that “just” happen are usually good things.

Today’s Video

Hi Stanley,
I just happened upon your blog. Humor is the single most underrecognized value in the business world today. Companies should start using it in their mission statements.

Dear Myriam:

I agree with you completely. Humor is so important. So many people in so many companies I visit are so uptight, they’re afraid to even laugh.

I’m glad you found my blog and I hope you signed up for either the RSS feed or to get my posts via email every day.

Take care and be sure and tell 500 of your closest friends about this site.

If I can help, please do not hesitate to ask.
