7 Steps to Benefiting From Lucid Dreaming

by Stanley Bronstein on October 1, 2008

What Is Lucid Dreaming?

According to wikipedia.org, “A lucid dream is a dream in which the person is aware that he or she is dreaming while the dream is in progress . . .”

To Quote Further From Wikipedia

“When the dreamer is lucid, he or she can actively participate in and often manipulate the imaginary experiences in the dream environment.  Lucid dreams can be extremely real and vivid depending on a person’s level of self-awareness during the lucid dream.”

So, What’s The Big Deal About Lucid Dreams?

Dreams are powerful.  They are like the comic books / movies of our mind.

We have a chance to do whatever we want and to think whatever we want, normally without any “real world” consequences.

In other words, our dreams are a testing ground.  Our dreams are a providing ground.  We can try stuff out and see what happens; all at little or no cost.

Our dreams are one of the last remaining bargains out there . . .  So much potential power; all for such little cost.

BECAUSE WE HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO DIRECT OUR DREAMS; TO CONTROL THEM; TO MANIPULATE THEM; WHILE WE ARE IN A LUCID DREAMING STATE, THEY ARE A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY TO TEST THINGS OUT.

Have You Ever Had Lucid Dreams?

I have them all the time (but not as much as I would like).

The dreams I have had while in a lucid dreaming state have been some of the best I have ever had.  To read of one such account, check out this blog entry from a few days ago.

BUT, I want to know if you have had lucid dreams and what they have meant to you.

So How Do We Increase Our Chances Of Lucid Dreaming and Benefiting From Them

  • #1 - Being aware of what lucid dreaming is. Being aware that lucid dreams are one where the dreamer has some input into the way things progress during the dream.
  • #2 - Being aware that lucid dreaming is possible. Just because one knows what a lucid dream is, THEY HAVE TO BELIEVE it is possible to increase their chances of it happening.
  • #3 - Directing our dreams. When we go to sleep, we have to meditate for a few minutes to help direct our mind in the proper direction.  If we tell it we want to have a great dream; a lucid dream, we have just increased the chances of that happening.
  • #4 - Setting the proper stage to dream well. - Keeping a regular sleep schedule. We need a quiet environment.  We need regular sleep patterns.  ALL OF THOSE HELP US TO CONTROL OUR DREAMS.  I know personally that one of my biggest impediments to controlling my dreams is that my schedule does not always allow me to keep a regular sleep schedule.
  • #5 - Paying attention to our lucid dreams. Once we know lucid dreams are possible AND once we have learned to increase the likelihood of them happening, we have to PAY ATTENTION to them.  Do NOT ignore them.  Embrace them.  There is power in your lucid dreams.
  • #6 - Recording them IMMEDIATELY. We must record these great dreams immediately, BEFORE we have a chance to forget them.  We must wake up once they are finished and take the time to record them IN DETAIL, no matter when they happen.  If it’s early in the morning, TOO BAD, wake up and write down the details.  If it’s late at night, TOO BAD, wake up and write down the details.  The important thing is to WRITE DOWN THE DETAILS.
  • #7 - Take time to interpret them. Once we have these wonderful dreams AND once we’ve recorded them, we need to take time to analyze them.  What are they telling us?  What are they trying to teach us?  What can we learn from them?  While dream experts might be able to help you, often, you are the person who is in the best position to interpret your own dreams.

Back in college I suffered from consistent and terrifying nightmares. I spent quite a bit of time learning about dreaming and finally discovered the concept of lucid dreaming. I learned that I could take control in my dreams and redirect them. It took time, but I eventually became able to get my conscious mind to step in when a nightmare came along and I was able to change the direction or just stop the flow of it altogether. Eventually my fears subsided thanks in large part to this feeling of powerfulness instead of powerlessness I had discovered.

Now I rarely have nightmares, but if one tries to come along, I hop in there and take control. I’m never afraid to go to sleep anymore.

Melissa:

That is an INCREDIBLY powerful story. We should probably interview you to find out how you were able to learn to take control of your dreams in order to have a more peaceful reality.

Stanley,

I would love to share my process. It was very powerful for me.

I began teaching my daughter about dreams when she turned 4, and let her know that if she wants to she can control them. We talk about her dreams regularly so that she can understand that they are not real and they are nothing to be afraid of.
