5 Ways To Pay It Forward
by Stanley Bronstein on February 3, 2009
Pay – To settle (a debt, obligation, etc.) by transferring money, goods or services, or by doing something.
Forward - Directed toward a point in advance; moving ahead; onward. Toward or at a place, point, or time in advance; onward; ahead.
5 Ways To Pay It Forward
1) Understanding The Concept Of “Paying It Forward”
Paying it forward is probably a concept that is as old as time, BUT I was first introduced to it, as a concept, in the movie by the same name that came out in 2000.
You can also read more about the movie here at Wikipedia and here at Netflix.
To make a long story short, the main character (a young boy named Trevor) creates a social studies project where he does the following:
With no expectation of reward whatsoever, Trevor decides to help out 3 people who are in dire need of help.
When they ask what they can do to repay him, he simply says, do the same thing for 3 other people (Pay It Forward).
Can you imagine what the world would be like if everyone decided to help out 3 strangers in the next month?
2) Just Because We Use The Word Pay Doesn’t Mean It’s About Money
All too often, people don’t need money. What they really need is for someone to pay attention to them; to help them.
For example, my wife does quite a bit of volunteer work with seniors. Also, one or two days a week she takes our dogs to nursing homes to visit residents.
She doesn’t pay them anything. No money is involved.
But, she gives them her time and her attention. That is what they want; that is what they need.
I heard an interesting statistic today. Approximately 65% of all residents in nursing homes get NO visitors during any given year. None, nada, zip, zilch.
Take your time and go visit someone today. Not only will they benefit, but you will too.
3) Realize It’s An Opportunity To Teach Your Children
If you have children, helping others is an excellent way to teach them how to behave properly.
Just think what message you would give to your children, if you were to take them to the grocery store and purchase $25 in groceries for a needy family, and then take your child to deliver them.
4) Keep It Simple
Simple things; it’s all about simple things.
You don’t have to do anything complicated. You don’t have to do anything elaborate.
You just have to do !
That’s what it’s all about.
5) Realize That If You Want The World To Be A Better Place, It Starts With Each And Every One Of Us
It’s really simple, if you want to have the prize (a better world), you have to pay the price (you have to do your share).
It starts with me; it starts with you; it starts with each and every one of us.
Begin doing your part now AND spread the concept of paying it forward to others.
Do a random act of kindness for someone and when they ask why you did it, tell them you just wanted to be nice to three people today and now they need to go out and do the same thing.
Watch how much the world can change if we all start doing that.
